We used to run for Coach Gary Truce at SUNY Binghamton a long time ago! We're over a half-century old now (and yikes, many of us are over 65). BUT we still run, bike, ROW, XC ski, walk, and work out! Please join us, whether or not you ran for Gary!

Biking Pace
Yesterday I rode two laps around Lake Monticello. A lap is just about 10 miles and it is very hilly. I averaged between 16 and 17 miles per hour. At this point I am clueless as to how to evaluate my pace because with so much hill riding I don't understand how to relate it back to a flat course. On the few places where it was flat, I was probably riding about 20 miles per hour.

I also do not have much of a clue on what is a good biking pace, especially when hills are involved. Obviously, downhills can make up time quickly. I wonder if a slightly hilly bike course is actually faster than a flat course, due to the excessive speeds that can be obtained on the downhills? Any thoughts on this? With running, of course, hillier courses are always slower, due to loss of efficiency when running downhill (you can't simply coast).
